Basic questions

ENGLISH TESTS:

We normally do our English test on Wednesdays, starting in October.
It normally takes about 3 hours with test and general instruction and advice.
The English test (Oxford Placement test-2) is ONLY a guideline for you.
The final decision is with the schools, who will skype/call most students in order to find out, if the English skills are sufficient!!!

APPLICATION:
We give you the application form when you come to do the English test, but YOU fill it in and email it to us, and we will forward it to the school.
Enclosed with the application also send:
- A VERIFIED COPY of your latest school report (translate the MAIN parts into English)

Official deadline is JULY 1st, but if you want to be sure, send it before March 15th!
When you have FINAL papers from your high school in June, send verified copies to us IMMEDIATELY! (verified: Your school stamp and sign every page to prove that it is an official copy)
„OLD Student”: If you already have high shool degree, you can send your papers any time.
If you already ARE studying a programme in Hungary, and want to leave it as long as you study in DK, ask your school EARLY for permission, not last moment!

TRAVEL:
Some students travel by car with their parents out to DK and make a little holiday.
Or you can travel with www.wizzair.com to Malmö and go to Cph.
Or book with www.norwegian.no / com
You can also take the bus, www.eurolines.com and go to Copenhagen
www.daniatransport.hu is a DK-Hungarian company, taking parcels from H to DK and vice-versa. They can ALSO take passengers from time to time, contact them if you need transport.
www.dpd.hu can also take parcels (from your parents?) to DK cheap, about ft. 9.000 for a parcel up to 31,5 kg!

WHEN?
All programmes start late August or early September. (a few start in February)
You check WHEN your programme starts ( if they arrange intro-days?) and we recommend you to arrive 3-4 days before, or if you want to work in the summer, 1-2 months before.

RESIDENCE/WORK PERMIT:
The school normally take new students to immigration authorities, to apply for residence permit.
It takes normally 3-4-5 weeks to get it, and when you have it, (the yellow card):
- You can stay 1-2 year legally in DK (a few places you must renew after 1 year)
- You are allowed to work
- You have free medical treatment

HEALTH INSURANCE:
Bring your Hungarian health insurance papers in ENGLISH (blue card) from your health insurance, so you are covered UNTIL you have your residence permit.
You do NOT have to pay health insurance in Hungary, when you are living in DK!

When living in DK, you ARE covered in Hungary when home on holiday etc.!

A PLACE TO LIVE:
Most students stay at a dormitory in the beginning, it cost ABOUT DKK 2.000-2.500/month (Copenhag approx. 3.000) for a single room, some places you can get double room cheaper. Deposit is normally 2-3x rent!
Most dormitories have internet access, common kitchens, washing facilities etc.
After some months many students join together and rent a flat in town, often cheaper and more central.
The school normally send you application form for dormitories, and give advice.
You MUST apply as soon as you are CONDITIONALLY accepted, that means normally in April-May.
You can normally rent a room from the 1st or 15th of a month.
We can help you to find a place to live, but some of the schools help you.
IF you ask us to help, we will keep parts of deposit you paid us!

BOOKS/TEACHING MATERIAL:
The number of books you should buy are different from programme to programme. Some schools send out list of books you should order. Do NOT buy too many of them, it is expensive! Wait and try find 2nd hand books, and use copies, and only buy what is necessary, ask old students!
Here you can find SOME books for free: www.ventus.dk BUT the homepage is in Danish, you need help from a native!

DK LANGUAGE:
Is related to English and German, but pronouncation is difficult.
It is possible to learn some Danish in Hungary, BEFORE you travel out:
BUDAPEST: www.skandinavhaz.hu

KECSMEMÉT: Dene Orsolya, deneorsolya@t-online.hu, or DK cultural inst. www.dankultura.hu
SZEGED: www.hu-dan.hu (Angyal Gabriella)

Here you can learn Danish on the web: http://netdansk.asb.dk/
You can only improve your life quality in DK, the more DK you speak. In DK you can study DK at a public language school, which is relatively cheap.
We recommend you to learn DK when in DK, for several reasons:
a. A better student job.
b. Top-up your degree with a bachelor in DK language.
c. Work in DK after your degree.

Most foreign students work to cover their living expenses, at least partly.
The market for student jobs in DK is large, typically in restaurants as dishwasher, bartender, cleaning, bringing out newspapers, babysitting, garden work or other jobs, where your DK language skills are not important.
Most students find a job after 4-5 months.
We are happy to write you a „recommendation” in DK language, IF you provide a few details about yourself, like hobbies, if you worked before, how and when.
Most schools give advice about jobs, when you have arrived in DK.
On request we do a "work seminar" here in Szeged, when enough students sign up.

STUDENT CARD
You will get an international student card in DK, which you can use to get certain deductions in DK, but probably not many when home in Hungary. For example MÁV does not accept an int. student card, we do not understand why?

TRANSPORT IN DK
Public transport in DK is effective, frequent and expensive.
Buy a bicycle instead, a raincoat and only take busses when necessary.
You can get student deduction with busses and trains, ask at the trainstation or check www.dsb.dk (danish state railways)
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUY A BIG LOCK FOR YOUR BIKE, AND LOCK IT TO SOMETHING!!!!!!!!! ALWAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ATER your DEGREE
You should of course either try to find a job or continue your studies, either in Denmark or somewhere else.
IF you are looking for a job in Denmark, you can get UNEMPLOYMENT benefit if you have finished your study.
You must finish a study of minimum 18 months, and if you are member of the insurance company (Danish "A-kasse") 1 year before your study (for free) you can get the benefit the day after you graduate. Read more on www.workindenmark.dk or contact us.
